Lower Cholesterol and prevent heart diseases
Heart diseases, which include heart attacks are the cause #1 of death as much in Mexico as in the United States.
Unfortunately as the high level of cholesterol in the blood cannot be felt, most people find out it until it is too late.
Studies show that regular soy protein consumption promotes normal cholesterol levels.
After years of carefully reviewing the results of these studies, in 1999 the FDA approved the following legend on soy products labels "25g of of soy protein combined as part of a low saturated fat and cholesterol diet can reduce the risk of heart disease ".
Scientists all over the world recognize that soy protein might directly lower cholesterol levels in the blood and, since then, more than 40 studies in human beings have verified it.
A 10% reduction of cholesterol is equivalent to 20% to 30% less probabilities of undergoing a heart attack.
When replacing animal protein with soy protein we are are having a double advantage: we consume the protein needed by our body and at the same time lower cholesterol levels in the blood.
Most high protein foods are also rich in saturated fats, quite to the contrary of soymilk, wich is rich in protein, but without cholesterol nor saturated fats.
Soy is our best option!

10% cholesterol reduction is equivalent to a 20% to 30% less probability of undergoing a heart attack.
When replacing animal protein by the one contained in soy we are having a double advantage: we consume protein needed by our body and at the same time lower cholesterol levels.
Most of the foods that are rich in protein also are rich in saturated fats, quite to the contrary of soy, which is very rich in protein, but without cholesterol nor saturated fats.

If I replace regular cow milk by soymilk, will I be at risk of suffering from osteoporosis due to a lack of calcium?
75% of the calcium consumed in American diets comes from dairy products. However, the United States is the number one country in the world presenting the most osteoporosis cases. It’s also the number one country in dairy products consumption at worldwide level.
Osteoporosis seems not to be developed by lack of calcium consumption, but by excess of acid in our blood stream, which causes our body to use calcium from the skeleton to balance acidity levels in the blood.
Our wise body will always look for this balance.
In Asian countries where soymilk and tofu replace dairy osteoporosis seems not to represent a problem in a scale so elevated as in the West.
But, the question is: What produces this acidity in our blood?
Basically what causes it is the excess of meat, refined sugars, preservatives and artificial ingredients that are part of modern diets.
The "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" affirmed: " osteoporosis is in fact a disease that is caused by a great number of factors, being the most important: excess of animal protein". In addition it found that those that consume meat at 65 years of age or more will have 5 to 6 times less calcium in their bones than vegetarians of the same age.
If we consume an average of a cup of tofu (soy cheese), coagulated with calcium chloride, we are taking the same amount of calcium that if we drank a glass of regular milk, but without antibiotics, hormones, cholesterol, saturated fats and much more digestible overall.
Coagulating tofu with calcium chloride makes its calcium content increase, it is being fortified. |

Soymilk contains a no acidic highly absorbable vegetal protein.
It is an excellent and nutritious option for lactose intolerant people.
If in addition to soymilk and tofu we add to our diet rich calcium non dairy foods like: Broccoli, beans, tortillas, brown rice, etc.
A calcium supplement at night, avoiding meat and refined sugars will help our body find its balance to prevent osteoporis.

Menopause & Soy
Menopause in its simpler definition is when the menstrual bled in women stops. During menopause the ovaries diminish their size and the body’s production of hormones diminishes.
Only 25% of the women do not suffer of any symptom.
The symptoms can include fatigue, irritability, insomnia, depression, nervousness, nocturnal perspiration, shames, occasional seasickness, palpitations, cystitis, urinary inconsistency, vaginitis, nauseous, gas, constipation, diarrhea and muscle pain.
In 1995 soy flour consumption was related to the diminishing of shames and menopause symptoms in general. Since then many different studies in the subject have been made and, some have demonstrated that the consumption of soy has a positive effect, but other studies have not been so encouraging. This is very probable since some women are more sensible to soy than others and to the fact that when a study of this nature is made the design of the same return is complicated due to the innumerable factors that could affect the results. What is very clear is the fact that the Asian population experiences many less symptoms than the western population and this has been related directly to the consumption of soy.
A very common option and widely recommended by doctors has been the replacement hormonal therapy that helps women to diminish the symptoms of menopause and, most important of all, is that it will help prevent loss of bone density that appears after menopause in most women, disease better known as osteoporosis.
The National Institute of the Health of the United States (NIH) recently has published that replacement hormonal therapy can increase the risk of suffering breast cancer and coronary diseases.
|
 |
Lamentably, nowadays more than 6 million American women are put under this type of therapy to prevent osteoporosis and to diminish the symptoms of menopause.
Phytoestrogens found in soy can be an alternative for replacement hormonal therapy. Soy is the richest content food in isoflavones, they are molecular speaking similar to estrogens, they have an affinity with the estrogen receivers in the bones to help absorb calcium. |
Prevention of breast and prostate cancer
According to the Journal of Nutrition: life style and nutrition determine 80% of what causes thin intestine, breast and prostate cancer, and a third of all the other types of cancer.
In fact, in the last 10 years scientists have a new perspective about the cancerous cells "the cancerous cells are caused by multiple genetic defects that can be caused by an exposure to environmental dietetic factors and life style " according to this article.
A miraculous food that can avoid that disease appears and even more that disappears once it appears still does not exist, the important thing is to take preventive measures and to enrich our diet with nutritious foods, as soy and all kinds of fruits, whole grains and vegetables. It is a change of life style that can really make the difference.
Consumption of soy can be simple and tasteful, but still better the fact that we are reducing the risk of suffering cancer.
Scientists have focused their research especially in the possible prevention of prostate and breast cancer, mainly by their relation with hormone production.
Soy is rich in phyitoestrogens, that have a positive effect in health. Specially isoflavones because they fight cancer in different ways.
Many of the cases of cancer that appear in women are caused by the way in which the estrogens act in the breast tissue. The scientists have initiated an exhaustive investigation to find out if the consumption of soy (more specifically isoflavones, phyitochemicals with estrogen activity) can block estrogens that affect the tissue.
Laboratory studies enormously support the benefits of soy in the prevention of the cancer.

People in Asian countries, where soy is regular part of their diet are 60 % less likely to suffer breast cancer, according to a study made in the 2002.
In the United States where soy is not consumed with regularity American women die four times more of cancer than Asian women.
Soy is a very studied food and if you would like to know more on this matter, and to have more specific data, we invite you to read this Spanish book published by INSTITUTO TOMAS PASCUAL on the Internet, where you will find more precise data, with its respective references.
Data not only of soymilk, but of all its forms, crops, composition, etc.
